Political corruption affects us all. We elect politicians and political parties expecting them to act in the public interest. By electing them we give them access to public resources and the power to take decisions that impact on our lives. Given this privileged position, immense damage can be inflicted by politicians or parties acting out of greed, or in the service of those who bankroll their ascent to power. It is not surprising that people the world over are demanding absolute probity of their political leaders. The NURU project seeks to create a demand for greater transparency in political finance and institutional change in the SADC region with the involvement of all key stakeholders through the evaluation of political finance practices in five countries in the SADC region. NURU helps to identify strengths and weaknesses of a political financing system in a given country. Its methodology allows examining the regulatory framework to compare it to internationally recognised principles on political financing and also compares what happens in practice, by testing access to information, party by party and candidate by candidate. By providing thorough diagnosis of the legal framework and the practice, it provides strong empirical evidence which allows all stakeholders to get a clear picture of areas, in which reforms are most needed.
The research processes have began with the five countries at varying levels of conducting the field research.
