Transparency International’s 5th Annual National Anti-Corruption Conference PDF Print E-mail
Transparency International Zimbabwe (TI Zimbabwe), the sole civil society initiative on anti corruption and good governance in Zimbabwe since 1996, is the local chapter of the international global movement against corruption Transparency International. In the twelve years of its existence as a chapter TI Zimbabwe has established itself as a forceful critic and watchdog of all manifestations of corruption, poor governance, and related vices such as money laundering and organized crime in Zimbabwe. The bulk of its work is directed at advocating for the observance of principles of transparency, accountability and integrity as critical values of good governance that have been tested and found to counter corruption or its potential in whole sectors such as the public sector and private sector, normally presumed to include business, as well as the civil society.

TI Zimbabwe’s advocacy work is carried out to meet the needs of prevention and public awareness and, or education strategies in the campaign against corruption. To deliver on these high ideals different platforms for advocacy and lobby have been employed over the years. In this regard, TI Zimbabwe has since 2003 hosted Annual Anti-Corruption Conferences; whose major objective is to form a national strategy and platform for the combating of corruption and promotion of participatory and responsive governance. This, by bringing together all relevant opinions from the public sector, private sector, civil society, the judiciary, law enforcement and other key stakeholders to the  solving the national corruption and poor governance crisis.

TI Zimbabwe is hosting the 5th Annual Anti-Corruption Conference, which is essentially a corruption audit conference, to undertake a forensic look at the nation’s state of corruption and governance spanning from January to February 2008. The theme of this year’s conference is, “Transition for Accountability in Leadership – A Break with The Past”. It is being held at a time when Zimbabwe is undergoing a transitional phase in its political history. In light of this development, the Annual Corruption Audit Conference for 2009 will call all stakeholders as part of the national strategy against corruption to contribute and offer recommendations for a negotiated way forward, in view of the passing of constitutional amendment no. 19 in both houses of Parliament.  Each presentation must recommend parliament’s role in sustaining and upholding the values underpinning a constitutional democracy which fully observes its watchdog role in the national anti-corruption agenda, as well as proposing how this can be interfaced with community development.

The National Integrity Signing Pledge and Award Evening is an important and integral part of the conference during which ordinary and prominent members of society to pledge their allegiance to the transformative values of integrity, accountability and transparency through appending signatures to the integrity pledge board. This is followed by rewarding those distinct players who have exhibited as well as contributed to the values TI Zimbabwe upholds and preaches as the first defense against a corrupt leadership and society.

To conclude this momentous event shall be the Annual Commemorative March for Anti-Corruption and Demand for Accountable and Transparent Governance marking the significance of the anti corruption fight in Zimbabwe at this stage in its political, social and economic history by marching through the city of Bulawayo.

TI Zimbabwe informs the public that delegates to this year’s conference will include Parliamentarians through representation from APNAC, the Speaker of Parliament, Commissioners of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, Community Development Organizations, Business and Private sector representatives, Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Groups, Youths through representative associations, Human Rights and Democracy groups, and Media through representation from ZUJ, MISA, MMPZ.
